I’m away on retreat for eight days at Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, MA. While I’m here, posting on my blog will be occasional – as the Spirit leads me!
On my second night here, I was in the chapel praying with Psalm 130, especially verses 5-6:
My soul is waiting for the Lord,I count on his word.My soul is longing for the Lord, more than sentinels wait for daybreak…
In my prayer I admitted to the Lord that I’m better at waiting for him than longing for him. So I asked him to help me not just to wait – but to long to long for him and his love.
I returned to my room and just before I went bed, I looked out the glass door to my deck and here’s what I saw on Brace Cove:
So I pulled up a chair to my door and prayed..
You answered my prayer, Lord!
I asked you to help me long for you
and then, within moments:
you hang my own moon,
just ‘cross the Cove
with a path of moonbeams
skipping the waters,
a beacon, beckoning,
showing the way,
lighting my path to you…
And a fog horn sounds, steady and sure,
calling my name, bidding me, « Come! »
« Come, draw near – and nearer still!
Walk on the water and come to the light! »
But I pull back – I hesitate.
I’m doubtful, afraid – and with Peter I ask,
« But, Lord – what if –
what if this, what if that? »
And you answer me, Lord, as you answered him,
with just one word,
you stretch out your hand and with love in your heart,
you say, « Come… »
Help me long to long for you, Lord…
Shine the light
that lights the way
and show me the path
from my heart to yours,
to you, Lord,
who long for me…
Protect me, Lord, while I’m awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace…
