It’s the eve of Pentecost, Lord,
and I pray for your Spirit to come and to hover,
above me, around me, within me…
I pray that your Spirit surround and embrace
and fill and heal the hearts of all,
especially, Lord, my family and friends
and those this night who are most in need
of your Spirit’s powerful presence…
I pray tonight for your Spirit to come
and envelop the world with freedom and peace,
with mercy and pardon, with healing and joy,
with hope for the dawning of brighter days…
On this Pentecost vigil, Lord, I pray
that your Spirit infuse the world and the Church
with the gifts we need:
to make the changes that yield to peace;
to heal the wounded and mend what’s broken;
to do what’s good, to love what’s just
and to walk with you, humbly, by your side…
For all of this, Lord, we need the grace,
the power and strength of your Spirit’s gifts;
we need the fire of your Spirit’s wisdom
and we need it sooner than later:
O God, we need it now!
Under the span of your Spirit’s wings,
we pray to you tonight:
protect us, Lord, while we’re awake
and watch over us while we sleep,
that awake, we go where your Spirit leads
and asleep, rest in your healing peace…
