NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 3/5

night prayer sunday 3 5

On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day’s celebration of Mass. Tonight’s reflection is rooted in today’s gospel where Jesus is transfigured on a mountain top and his friends (Peter, James, John) catch a glimpse of his glory…

For a few moments, Lord,
you showed yourself in all your glory
to Peter, James and John…
Even before your suffering and death,
you gave them a glimpse of the Easter glory
your rising would reveal…
They were accustomed to your humanity
but now you disclosed your divinity,
the fullness of who you are…
Like all of humanity, Lord,
I’m created in your image,
made in the image of God:
    though I’m not divine,
        my being reflects your divinity;
    though I’m not eternal,
        I’m made for everlasting life;
    though I’m broken, not perfect,
        I’m called to be holy;
    though I tarnish with sin
        your image within me,
    your grace never fails
        to restore my soul,
    to wash me clean
        ’til once again
    my being mirrors
        you my Lord and my God…
Transfigure me this Lent, Lord:
    cleanse me with your grace,
    heal the wounds my sins have caused
    and mend my broken parts
’til once again my soul reflects
    the beauty of divinity
    alive in my humanity,
    a promise of the glory
        I pray one day I’ll share…
Protect me, Lord, while I’m awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace…

Two songs about change tonight:
the first asks God to « take my as I am »
    – but also to « summon out what I shall be; »
the second asks God to change my heart
    – and to shape and mold me as a potter works clay…

Take, O take me as I am,

Summon out what I shall be.

Set your seal upon my heart

and live in me…

Change My Heart, O God by Roby Duke

Change my heart, O God, make it ever true.
Change my heart, O God, may I be like you.

You are the potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me, this is what I pray.

Change my heart, O God, make it ever true.
Change my heart, O God, may I be like you.
