Pause for Prayer: TUESDAY 5/2

Pause for Prayer: TUESDAY 5/2

Sunday afternoon I took off with some friends for Rockport and
if only to see the magnificent stage in this intimate venue!)
Performing was Cantusa men’s acapella group of exceptional
quality and depth.  This concert would easily have a place among
the 10 top musical moments of my life.
They sang a piece whose lyrics I’m very familiar with – though
I never new it had a musical setting. Every year around this time
I used to distribute  to graduating seniors copies of Thomas Merton’s
prayer, « My God, I Don’t Know Where I’m Going. » The music is
by Ysaye Barnwell and it’s – a tango!  Had I not heard it with my
own ears, I’d never have believed this could work – but it does
and it works beautifully and reverently.
I’m going to let Cantus’ prayer in song stand for the whole of our
prayer together this morning…

My Lord God
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself.
My Lord God!

I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
My Lord God!
I believe that my desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope that I have this desire in all that I am doing.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,
Therefore I will trust you always though
Though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and  never will you leave me to face my perils alone
My Lord God
Never will you leave me to face my perils alone
My Lord God
